MBDH Ayurvedic biotin capsules

Hair Jan, 2023

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a vitamin found in foods such as eggs, milk and bananas.

Biotin is an important part of enzymes in the body that break down substances such as fats, carbohydrates and others. There is no good test for low biotin levels, so it is usually diagnosed by symptoms that include thinning hair and a red, scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Biotin is used for biotin deficiency. It is also commonly used for hair loss, brittle nails and other conditions, but there is no clear scientific evidence for this use. Biotin supplements may interfere with some laboratory tests. Talk to your doctor if you are taking biotin supplements and need blood tests.

How does it work?

Biotin is an important component of enzymes in the body that break down certain substances such as fats, carbohydrates and others.

There is no good laboratory test for biotin deficiency, so the condition is usually diagnosed by symptoms that include thinning hair (often with loss of hair color) and a red, scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Nervous system symptoms include depression, exhaustion, hallucinations, and tingling in the hands and feet. There is some evidence that diabetes can lead to biotin deficiency.

DOSING

The appropriate dose of biotin depends on several factors, such as age and health. Currently, there is insufficient scientific information to determine an appropriate dose range for biotin. Keep in mind that natural products are not always safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow the appropriate product label directions and consult your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare professional before use.

There is no recommended dietary allowance for biotin. Adequate biotin consumption rates are 7 mcg for children 0-12 months, 8 mcg for children 1-3 years, 12 mcg for children 4-8 years, 20 mcg for children 9-13 years, 25 mcg for adolescents 14-18 years. , 30 mcg for adults over 18 and pregnant women and 35 mcg for women who are breastfeeding.

Uses of Biotin

Recommended daily allowance

It is recommended to take 30 to 100 micrograms of biotin per day for teenagers and adults.

Because it dissolves in water, the extra biotin will pass through your body when you urinate. While most people can function with biotin supplements, some people report mild side effects such as nausea and digestive problems. There are no known symptoms of toxicity associated with too much biotin.

Supplements and Diabetes

Some research, including animal studies, suggests that people with type 2 diabetes may benefit from taking biotin supplements to help regulate blood glucose levels.

According to another animal study, biotin may help prevent kidney damage in people with insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes. Again, more research is needed to confirm this.

Healthy hair, skin, and nails

Biotin deficiency is rare. But because deficient people often show symptoms of hair loss or a scaly red rash, some doctors and supplement companies recommend increasing intake.

Fetal development

Although rare, pregnant women can develop a biotin deficiency. To help support your baby's health, take a prenatal vitamin that contains biotin and folic acid during pregnancy. High doses of biotin, however, can be dangerous to a baby, so supplemental biotin is not recommended.

Natural sources of biotin

Biotin can be found in various foods like:

  • egg yolk

  • organ meats like liver, kidney etc

  • Nuts like almonds, peanuts, and walnuts

  • Peanut butter

  • soybeans and legumes

  • whole grains and cereals

  • In fruits and vegetables like cauliflower, bananas, mushrooms

Because food processing methods such as cooking can render biotin ineffective, raw or less processed versions of these foods contain more active biotin.

It is always better to get nutrients from natural sources. If you can't get enough biotin naturally, your doctor may suggest a supplement. Remember that dietary supplements are not controlled by the FDA for safety, purity, dosage, or quality, so research your brands before you buy.
